- 1390: The first documented trial for witchcraft began in Paris
- 1692: The Court of Oyer and Terminer convened for the Salem witch trials was dissolved
- 1727: A severe earthquake rocked New England
- 1913: Floods in El Salvador killed thousands of people
- 1923: Turkey, as a successor state to the Ottoman Empire, declared independence
- 1940: US Secretary of War Henry L Stimson drew the first number in the first peacetime military draft in US history
- 1942: Nazis murdered 16,000 Jews in Pinsk, Soviet Union
- 1966: The organizing conference for the National Organization for Women (NOW) was held
- 1969: The US Supreme Court ordered an end to all school segregation “at once”
- 1970: The Electoral Reform Society called for the introduction of Proportional Representation (PR) in Northern Ireland’s elections
- 1983: 550,000 Dutch people demonstrated against cruise missiles
- 1988: 2,000 anti-abortion protesters were arrested for blocking clinics in the US
- 1990: 30 people died in a magnitude 5.7 earthquake in Algeria
- 1998: South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission presented its report, which condemned both sides for committing atrocities during Apartheid
- 1998: Hurricane Mitch, the second deadliest Atlantic hurricane in history, made landfall in Honduras
- 1999: The deadliest Indian Ocean tropical super cyclone hit Odisha, India with winds of up to 300 mph, leaving 9,885 people dead
- 2011: A record-breaking snowstorm in the northeastern United States left nearly 2 million people without power
- 2012: Hurricane Sandy made landfall in New Jersey resulting in 110 deaths and $50 billion in damage
- 2018: Storms in Italy killed at least 11 people, flooded 75% of Venice, and spawned two tornadoes in Terracina
- 2019: Lebanon’s Prime Minister Saad Hariri resigned after two weeks of nationwide protests and an economic crisis
- 2019: Climate Central published a study in Nature Communications stating rising seas could endanger 150 million people worldwide, three times more than previously thought
- 2019: 1.5 million people were left without power in California as the utility company turned power off to try and avoid sparking more wildfires
- 2020: India recorded more than 8 million COVID-19 cases, and a death toll of 120,527
