On This Day
- 1825: Uruguay declared independence from Brazil
- 1830: Belgium revolted against the Netherlands and began the Belgian Revolution
- 1912: The Kuomintang, the Chinese nationalist party, was founded
- 1915: A hurricane killed 275 people in Galveston, Texas and caused approximately $50 million damage
- 1921: The US signed a peace treaty with Germany
- 1950: US President Harry Truman ordered the army to take control of the railroads to avert a strike
- 1960: Demonstrations were held against Congolese prime minister Patrice Lumumba
- 2012: 85,000 people were displaced by severe floods in Myanmar
- 2012: 39 people were killed and 80 were injured after a gas leak in a North Venezuelan refinery
- 2017: Category 4 Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Texas northeast of Corpus Christi with 130 mph winds
