On This Day

  • International Biodiesel Day
  • 1664: Austria and the Ottoman Empire signed the Peace of Vásvár
  • 1675: A Portuguese-Jewish synagogue opened in Amsterdam
  • 1678: Netherlands and France signed a peace treaty in Nijmegen
  • 1792: A large scale insurrection against the French monarchy occurred in Paris
  • 1809: Quito, Ecuador and the surrounding area was the first region to declare itself independent of Spain in Latin America
  • 1822: Antioch, Syria was hit by an earthquake resulting in about 20,000 people dying
  • 1827: Race riots occurred in Cincinnati, Ohio and about 1,000 blacks left for Canada
  • 1831: A hurricane hit Barbados and about 1,500 people died
  • 1856: A hurricane washed away 200-300 revelers at Last Island, Louisiana
  • 1913: The Second Balkan War ended with the signing of The Treaty of Bucharest
  • 1920: The Treaty of Sèvres was signed between World War I’s Allies and Turkey
  • 1926: An Italian-Spanish peace treaty was signed
  • 1944: Race riots broke out in Athens, Alabama
  • 1968: Race riots were experienced in Miami, Chicago, and Little Rock
  • 1971: During the internment round-up operation in West Belfast, 11 unarmed civilians were killed in The Ballymurphy Massacre
  • 1976: A Provisional Irish Republican Army volunteer was shot dead by the British Army as he drove in Belfast killing him and his 3 children, sparking “peace rallies” throughout the month by the ‘Peace People’
  • 1977: About 100 white sympathisers joined evicted black squatters in protest against the demolition of their homes outside Cape Town, South Africa
  • 1980: Hurricane Allen hit Brownsville, Texas. Altogether, the storm killed 269 people
  • 1993: A 7.0 earthquake hit the South Island of New Zealand
  • 1994: The last British troops left Hong Kong after troops had been stationed there since September 1841
  • 2013: 6 people were killed after Paluweh Volcano erupted in Indonesia
  • 2014: Michael Brown’s killing by a police officer prompted protests and rioting to break out in Ferguson, Missouri
  • 2018: Evidence of one million Uighurs being held by China in “counter-extremism centers” was presented to the UN Committee on Human Rights
  • 2018: Anti-government protests began in Bucharest, Romania, resulting in over 400 people being injured in clashes with police
  • 2019: Typhoon Lekima made landfall in Zhejiang Province, China, killing at least 32 people and prompting the evacuation of one million people
  • 2019: Monsoon flooding in southern and western India killed at least 150 people and left 100,000 people in emergency relief camps
  • 2020: A rare Derecho wind storm hit the US Midwest flattening cornfields, leaving hundreds of thousands of people without electricity, and killing two people
