Many days there are far too many anniversaries, holidays, and observances to post about individually on social media, so in an effort to have more of them available, LLPHP is going to experiment with posting them daily here. On This Day

  • 1493: The deadline for all Jews to comply with an order to leave Sicily
  • 1552: The Dutch West Coast was hit by a heavy storm that killed hundreds of people
  • 1915: The US House of Representatives rejected a proposal to give women the right to vote
  • 1932: Hattie W Caraway of Arkansas became the first woman elected to be a US Senator
  • 1952: The University of Tennessee admitted its first black student
  • 1953: 9 “Jewish” physicians were arrested for “terrorist activities” in Moscow
  • 1954: Austria experienced its worst avalanche which killed 200 people. Just 9 hours later a second one killed 115 people
  • 1957: The Southern Christian Leadership Council (SCLC) was founded with Martin Luther King Jr. as its leader
  • 1966: A 12 day NYC transit strike ended
  • 1979: A record blizzard struck the Midwestern US killing over 100 people
  • 1990: Romania banned the Communist party, the first Warsaw Pact member to do so
  • 1995: A major earthquake killed 5,092 people in Kobe Japan
  • 2010: An earthquake devastated Haiti, killing approximately 160,000 people and destroying the capital, Port-au-Prince
  • 2020: The Philippines’ Taal Volcano began erupting, prompting evacuations
