- National POW/MIA Recognition Day
- 1394: Jews were expelled from France by order of King Charles VI
- 1678: France and Spain signed the Treaties of Nijmegen
- 1778: The first treaty between the US and Indian tribes was signed at Fort Pitt
- 1809: The Treaty of Fredrikshamn Peace brought peace between Sweden and Russia in the Finnish War and ceded the territory that would become Finland to Russia
- 1849: Harriet Tubman made her first escape from slavery in Maryland with two of her brothers
- 1850: The Fourth Great Fire of San Francisco occurred
- 1861: The first class for escaped slaves was taught by Mary Peake at Fortress Monroe Virginia (now Hampton University)
- 1876: Race riots occurred in South Carolina
- 1900: American anthracite coal miners went on strike for better wages until October 25, by which time the owners were persuaded that their stand was harming President McKinley’s campaign
- 1902: The US filed an official protest against anti-semitism in Romania
- 1916: 40,000 Amsterdam demonstrators demanded general voting rights
- 1926: A hurricane hit Miami and Palm Beach, Florida leading to about 450 people’s deaths
- 1928: A hurricane hit Lake Okeechobee, Florida drowning 1,800-2500 people
- 1940: Nazis deprived Jews of possessions
- 1956: Black students entered a Clay, Kentucky elementary school
- 1959: A typhoon killed 2,000 people in Japan and Korea
- 1960: Cuba nationalized US banks
- 1962: The US Justice Department filed its first suit to end segregation in public schools
- 1978: Anwar Sadat, Menachem Begin, and Jimmy Carter signed the Camp David Accords, a framework for peace in the Middle East and between Egypt and Israel
- 1989: Hurricane Hugo began a 4 day sweep through the Caribbean killing 62 people
- 1990: The Soviet Union and Saudi Arabia restored diplomatic ties
- 2018: Flooding in Nigeria killed over 100 people as the Benue and Niger Rivers overflowed
- 2018: Hurricane Florence necessitated 900 people to be rescued from flooding and killed 23 people in Wilmington, North Carolina
- 2019: Indonesia raised the female marriage age to 19 to be in line with males and curb child marriages
- 2020: Barbados announced its intention to remove Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state and become a republic
