  • International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

  • 1357: Charles IV issued a letter of protection regarding the Jews of Strasbourg Alsace
  • 1667: A deadly earthquake rocked Shemakha, in the Caucasus, killing 80,000 people
  • 1744: Austrian forces pillaged and killed the Jews of Prague
  • 1839: A devastating cyclone slammed into Southeastern India destroying the city of Coringa and 20,000 ships, and killing an estimated 300,000 people
  • 1874: The United States Greenback Party was established consisting primarily of farmers affected by the Panic of 1873
  • 1894: The Greenback (Independent) Party was organized in Indianapolis
  • 1897: Spain granted Puerto Rico autonomy
  • 1930: Ito, Japan recorded 690 earthquakes in 1 day
  • 1941: German Jews in the Netherlands were declared stateless, losing their nationality
  • 1953: An earthquake and tsunami struck Honshu, Japan
  • 1955: Racial segregation was forbidden on trains and buses traveling between US states
  • 1958: Senegal became an autonomous state in the French Community
  • 1969: John Lennon returned his OBE decoration to protest against the UK’s support for the Vietnam War
  • 1975: Netherlands granted Suriname independence
  • 1987: Supertyphoon Nina devastated the Philippines swallowing entire villages and killing at least 1,036 people
  • 1988: A widely felt earthquake hit the Northeastern US and Canada, though no damage was reported
  • 2000: An earthquake struck Baku, Azerbaijan
  • 2009: A powerful storm brought 3 years worth of rain in 4 hours to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia causing flooding, killing over 150 people, and sweeping thousands of cars away during Hajj
  • 2011: Sudden severe storms struck Sri Lanka, killing 27 people and damaging thousands of homes
  • 2018: The historic Camp Fire in California was declared 100% contained with final totals of 85 people dead, 249 people missing, and 153,000 acres and 14,000 homes burnt
  • 2018: A magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck Iran’s Kermanshah province injuring at least 700 people
