On This Day

  • 1893: New Zealand became the first country to grant all women the right to vote
  • 1896: The Bombay plague epidemic officially began when Dr.Acacio Gabriel Viegas detected the first case. It went on to kill 12 million people in India
  • 1940: Nazi decree forbade gentile women from working in Jewish homes
  • 1941: Nazis forced German Jews 6 and older to wear Jewish stars
  • 1951: Italian civil servants went on strike for pay increases
  • 1955: Hurricane Hilda killed 200 people in Mexico
  • 1974: Hurricane Fifi hit the coast of Honduras causing about 5,000 people to die on this day and the next
  • 1983: St Kitts and Nevis declared independence from the UK
  • 1985: An 8.1 earthquake hit Mexico City, killed an estimated 10,000 people, and leaving 250,000 people homeless
  • 2017: A 7.1 earthquake south east of Mexico City killed over 300 people
  • 2019: Tropical Depression Imelda hit southeast Texas and Louisiana prompting widespread evacuations
